Independent Design Researcher | Garment Architecture | Passive Thermal Systems

Melissa Lockwood is an independent design researcher exploring the intersection of garment architecture, thermodynamics, geometry, and sustainable manufacturing. Her work applies principles from textiles and pattern engineering to challenges in architecture and industrial production.

Her current research project, Solar Veils, investigates a passive cooling system that uses a ventilated textile “second skin panals” mounted ob but held away from a building façade. The system is designed to block most incoming solar radiation while creating a naturally ventilated air channel that encourages hot air to rise and exhaust through the stack effect. By reducing heat gain before it reaches the building, the concept aims to lower cooling demand without mechanical energy.

Melissa also develops geometric approaches to apparel manufacturing. Her IQTEST (Intelligent Geometric Textile Efficiency System) research explores whether factory pattern layouts can be mathematically reorganized so that areas normally discarded as fabric waste become usable design space. Through geometric inversion and complementary pattern placement, the concept seeks to transform offcuts into additional garment components, moving mass production closer to practical zero-waste manufacturing while maintaining compatibility with industrial cutting processes.

Her work combines observation, experimental prototyping, and interdisciplinary thinking to examine how geometry can improve both environmental performance and manufacturing efficiency.
