About Melissa Lockwood

Melissa Lockwood is an artist, designer and fabricator whose work moves between textiles, material research, installation and architecture.

Her practice investigates how lightweight materials and simple systems can transform the relationship between bodies, buildings and their environments. Her earlier IQTEST-NYC research developed zero-waste garment systems using the negative spaces between conventional clothing patterns as generative material.

Lockwood worked in the Fabrication Department at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York on major installations that affected and engaged the museum's architecture. Her work has also included climate communication research with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and construction and site-specific sunshade fabrication at Arcosanti and Cosanti.

Solar Veils extends this trajectory from garment construction into architecture. Inspired in part by Paolo Soleri's idea of Garment Architecture, the project investigates lightweight textile membranes, shade, airflow and the small space between textile and building as materials for climate-responsive architectural installation.
